    Auto Industry Recession?

Saw this story today on Yahoo! News.  Comments (rant) afterward…

The head of Nissan Motor Co. said even if the United States is not in recession, its auto industry is.

“We are very lucid on the situation of the industry that there is a recession in the United States, at least in the car market,” Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn told reporters, saying automakers face rising costs for iron ore, precious metals, aluminum and other materials.

“These represent risk for the industry,” he said.

Ghosn, who is also president and CEO of Renault SA of France, expressed optimism that the market will improve.

The American auto market “will not stay in recession for a long time,” he said.

U.S. car and light truck sales totaled 16.1 million vehicles in 2007, the worst year in a decade, and sales are expected to slip this year as well.

Ghosn said the cost of raw materials, increasing for the fourth straight year, must come down.

It amazes me that sales of over 16 million passenger vehicles in one year is considered a “bad year”.  These people aren’t happy unless everyone in the country is wasting their money constantly on new cars. Our economy is still too dependent on cars in many ways. Never mind the pollution, waste of energy, and continuation of poorly designed, car dependent cities. Too many people’s jobs are still dependent on the auto industry, when you consider the entire industry supply chain. We need to transition our economy away from this.

Too many people buy new cars every few years. Many replace their cars every 2 years. Insane. Seriously, cars are now made to last several hundred thousand miles. Unless you have a 20+ mile commute each way to work a car should last you at least 10 years.

So to sum up. I view any slow down in the American automobile market as a good thing. It may be painful for some people in the short run, but you know, I’ve been through layoffs and whatnot.  It sucks, but thats just the way it is. I’m not saying kill the auto industry all at once, but we need to encourage fewer people to go into it in the first place. All those potential employees should end up working in green industries that help rather than hurt. THAT is where out money and resources should be going.

End of rant. If you disagree, well, I’m sorry to inform you but you are wrong.

    A good ride

Rode the new Electra Townie 21 from our house, down the Whiterock Creek Trail, to Whiterock Lake, and back today. 23.3 miles. 2.25 hours. Not the fastest ride ever, but the first time I’ve ridden that far and actually seen my surroundings the whole time — thanks to the Townies killer upright geometry.

The weather was great, but not many people were out on the trail. I guess they were deterred by the yesterday’s rains, which left a few spots covered in slick mud. Great for having a nice concrete lunch faceplant, which I avoided with the Townie’s nice fat tires. Rode through some water too. Got the new bike nice and dirty. Time for some fenders. A good ride.

Tags: exercise, shitty american lifestyle, walking during lunch

    Walk, dammit, walk!

Just went for a 45 minute walk during lunch. Feels good. Trying to burn off the winter flab. I think this will be the plan for the upcoming months. Need to bring my iPod so I can be motivated by Minor Threat, Black Flag, the Clash, and other good stuff.

Of course, it will soon be pretty hot outside. I’m going to walk anyway. I’ll bring a shirt to change into and some clean-up stuff. Yes, I may be a bit “used up” looking in the afternoon, but fuck it. I’m determined not to let my retarded American lifestyle turn me into a big fat blob.

    1st bike pic

So here’s a shot of my bike – the first bike pic on this site (click for bigger view). No, it’s not a bad ass new mountain bike. It’s a Giant ATX 750 from 1996. I was at work one day, walked into my office (cubicle), and there it was! My wife had snuck it in to surprise me for my birthday. I’d been wanting a mountain bike, since I’d sold my old one years ago to make the rent during some pretty lean years. So this bike means a lot to me. Great bike. Chromoly frame, pretty good components. Used to ride it off road a lot, but now I’ve got some skinnier city-type tires on it for bikes paths, etc.

Over the last couple of months I’ve been riding a lot. Pretty much all city bike paths, but some good rides for sure. I actually broke down and bought a cool new cruiser the other day — an Electra Townie 21. Extremely cool and comfortable bike, and I’m planning to really put some miles on it.  But as I looked at new bikes, my appreciation of the old Giant just really swelled. This bike has never broken down — except for a few flats. No component has ever given out. Fucking rad bike.
